The Prime Minister of Malaysia’s Melbourne Scholar Programme

Invitation for Applications
The University of Melbourne, under the patronage and with the consent of YAB the Prime Minister of Malaysia, invites applications for the above mentioned Scholarship. The Scholarship is for staff in the early stages of their academic career at a university in Malaysia who (i) show outstanding promise and leadership potential and (ii) wish to undertake a PhD in Science or Engineering at the University of Melbourne (Australia).

The Scholarship:
• Is available to citizens of Malaysia to undertake a PhD at the University of Melbourne in the Faculty of Engineering or Faculty of Science (includes Information Systems);
• Provides a tuition fee waiver, a living allowance ($A19,040 per annum, 2007 rate), and an annual special status allowance ($A1,000 per annum) during the period of study (up to four years based on satisfactory progress). As flight tickets are not included, this expense must be covered by the recipient or their employer;
• Is for commencement in 2008. The recipient will also have access to the outstanding study and research support facilities provided by the University’s School of Graduate Studies and the faculty and department in which they are enrolled.

Special status of the Scholar
The Scholar will be accorded special status at the University, and will be regarded as an honorary ambassador for Malaysia on the University campus. The privileges and responsibilities of the Scholar include invitations to join activities conducted by the University of Melbourne’s Asialink Centre, occasional speaking opportunities to various groups/associations within the University of Melbourne community, participation in appropriate academic staff training and development programs, and playing an active role in the University of Melbourne alumni activities upon return after graduation.

Eligibility requirements
1. Applicants must be a citizen of Malaysia and in the early stages of their academic career at a Malaysian university.
2. Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ teaching and/or research experience in higher education.
3. Applicants must meet the University of Melbourne’s PhD entry requirements and be off ered a place in the University’s PhD program in either the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Science for commencement in 2008. 4. Applicants must have the necessary character commensurate with the special status of the Melbourne Scholar.

Selection
A panel established by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia will fi nalise the selection.

Application Procedure
By the application closing date of 31 August 2007, applicants must:
1. Apply for admission to a PhD in Engineering or Science at the University of Melbourne. Th e following website explains the various ways that this application may be submitted. 2. Send a résumé and a copy of the above mentioned application form to:
