THE United World Colleges comprising 12 colleges worldwide is offering a two-year fully residential programme – the International Baccalaureate qualification. Students at UWC enjoy extracurricular activities from mountaineering to sailing and are expected to learn a foreign language and take part in community activities.

For the academic year 2006-2008, Malaysia has been offered places for SPM/ International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) holders at UWC in Hong Kong, India, Norway, United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

More…Two places are offered at two new colleges: UWC Costa Rica and UWC Bosnia. For the first time this year, Malaysian students with good SPM or equivalent results can also apply for the UWC of the Adriatic in Italy with the view of specialising in Physics or Music at tertiary level.

Parents may be required to contribute financially where places are offered on partial scholarships. The Malaysia UWC national committee also invites corporations and foundations to sponsor students to these colleges.

The UWC National Committees are found in 114 countries. They promote UWC and select the students to attend the colleges.

The fact that students are selected from within their own cultures and communities is a unique feature of the UWC. In the 41 years since the first UWC opened in Wales, more than 30,000 students from 176 countries have attended the UWC.

In Malaysia, the national committee chairman is Tan Sri Dr Awang Had Salleh and Brig Gen (rtd) Anim Harun is a member. The selection committee consists of a national committee member and is assisted by UWC Malaysia Alumni committee members.

Candidates vying for places should have a SPM or IGCSE and be aged between 16 and 18 years.

Selection is highly competitive and students with at least six distinctions at SPM or 50% A/A* at IGCSE with good co-curriculum records should apply.

The selection processes include written applications and personal interviews. Other elements may include a piece of written work, group discussions and teamwork exercises.

UWC graduates are involved in the selection so there will be ample opportunities to discover more about UWC .

Successful applicants must be committed to community service and have a passion for music, drama or sport.

The selection process looks for candidates with an open mind and the personal qualities which will enable them to live and study for two years in an intensive multicultural environment.
