New Zealand Scholarships
MALAYSIAN students
looking to pursue postgraduate studies in New Zealand now have a number of new scholarship options to choose from, with the University of Waikato announcing a range of doctoral scholarships worth up to NZ$85,000 for three years.

The scholarships are run through the six flagship research institutes at Hamilton’s University of Waikato – the Environmental Research Institute (ERI); the Institute for Business Research (IBR); the Institute of Professional Learning: Te Whai Toi Tangata (IPL); the National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (Nidea); Te Kotahi Research Institute (TKRI); and the Wilf Malcolm Institute of Educational Research (WMIER).

The doctoral scholarship studies include environmental research; sustainable business practice and/or international trade and commerce; improvement of professional learning and development at any level; and investigating curriculum, assessment and/or policy implementation in the early years.

The NZ$85,000 over the three years includes tuition fees and scholarship instalments during the tenure, while awardees are required to study full-time.

University pro vice-chancellor (postgraduate) Professor Kay Weaver said there was a high calibre of applicants last year.

“For successful applicants, these scholarships act as a springboard to success and a career head-start.

“Last year we saw a growth in the quality and quantity of applicants and we expect that to increase again this year.

“Last year’s scholarship winners are researching topical issues that can shape public policy, influence curriculum design and education, implement environmental change, and contribute to the economic success of Maori,” she said.

All six of the university’s research institutes support world-class research in environmental science, demography and economic analysis, business and leadership, professional learning and development, education, and Maori and indigenous development.

With sustainability – be it environmental, economic, social and cultural – being a strong emerging theme across all of the institutes, they each have funded programmes which span the length of the research pipeline from discovery to application and commercialisation.

Applications for these Research Institute Scholarships are now open till April 30.
