Italian Government Scholarship Program

The Italian Ministry of Foreign affairs is offering scholarships for the 2008/2009 academic year to Malaysian citizens

A. The selection of candidates:
The selection of the candidates will be done in accordance with the following general evaluation criteria, in order to assess - in the most equitable way - various factors, which may constitute an acceptable basis for selecting the candidates, whose academic and/or professional curriculum appears valid and substantial:
· opportunity to expand and strengthen the teaching of the Italian language;
· the opportunity to assist the Italian cultural presence in some areas where, for a variety of reasons, it has not yet been possible to sustain;
· Positive outcome resulting from the granting of scholarships to candidates who have the intention and a proven capability to devote themselves, upon returning to Malaysia, to activities that would assist an improved co-operation between Italy and Malaysia.

The candidates will be selected by the Italian-Malaysian joint Committee, chaired by the First Secretary of the Embassy of Italy.

B. Each scholarship consists of:
Return air ticket
Monthly installments of approx. € 700 each
Health Insurance premiums
Reduction of course fees, where applicable in selected public universities and institutions. The candidates must enquiry at the chosen institution in Italy to check the amount of fees and if any reduction is provided.

Please note that scholarships do not provide lodging allowance.

The scholarships can be allocated as:
Various long-term courses (from 8 to 12 months)
Short-term courses (minimum 3 months)

Scholarships must be benefited from 1st October 2008 to 30th September 2009.
The scholarships can be specifically allocated for the following courses:
· Research
Duration: depending on the individual programme of research. A letter from the hosting University and Tutor for the research is requested.
· Single Courses at University
Duration: from 5 to 8 months
· University Courses
Duration: from 9 to 12 months
· Post-graduate Courses
Duration: up to 12 months
a) Ph.D. Enrolment is subject to specific regulations set by each University
b) Master courses
c) Specialization courses (Medical disciplines are excluded)
· Courses to be attended at Academies, Music Schools, National School of Cinematography etc.)
Duration: 1 to 12 months
· Italian Language and Culture Courses

Closing date for application: 9th May 2008 by 1.00 pm.
The application forms are to reach the Embassy of Italy by the deadline.

C. Pre-requisites:
The knowledge of Italian language will be a preferential condition for scholarships.
For the enrolment in University courses the knowledge of the Italian language is usually requested. Therefore, the scholarship holders have to sit for an oral Italian exam at the chosen University, normally at the beginning of September. Candidates who have already attended a course, of at least three months, at the University for Foreigners either in Perugia or in Siena, may not have to sit for this test. It is therefore advisable to include in the application proof of attendance of Italian courses at these universities.

Candidates without knowledge of Italian language can apply in the following cases:
a) Request of Italian language courses;
b) Research studies (if the letter of an Italian academic supports the application form, stating that he is available to follow the candidate in his/her own language)
c) If the University course will be preceded by a course of Italian language such as to enable the candidate to obtain a sufficient knowledge of this language and to permit him to follow the class in Italian.
d) In particular cases in which the courses are given in English (Polytechnic of Turin Master in Technology, Bocconi University Master in International Economics, etc.)

To enrol in any University course, and to attend Conservatories or Academies, candidates should provide a High School certificate (A Level). Should they wish to attend special postgraduate studies or Ph.D. in Italy, a University MA degree is required. The candidates for long-term scholarships, apart from Italian language courses, must already hold a University MA degree. To be admitted to any single University course, a certificate stating that the candidate is enrolled in a Malaysian University is required.

Age limit for candidates: 35 years old at the time of application.
No age limit for teachers of Italian language, teaching Italian courses at the moment of the application.

1. DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED:
Candidate must submit three sets each containing the following documents:
1-Official application forms in Italian duly completed and with 4 passport size photos, bearing the original signature of the candidate. The applicant intention to apply for a short or a long-term scholarship (S.T. or L.T.) must be clearly stated in the upper margin of the application form. The application form is issued by the Embassy of Italy, from Monday to Friday, 9.00-13.00 or can be downloaded from the Website of The Embassy of Italy www.ambkualalumpur.esteri.it as follows:
Cultural cooperation>Scholarships>Forms
A translated form in English is provided only to assist the candidates in completing the original form in Italian.
2-Photocopy of the photo page of the passport.
3-Curriculum vitae and academic record showing particular reference to the activities carried out in the chosen field relating to the scholarship application.
4-Photocopies of the Higher School Certificate (with record of achievement).
5-Photocopies of any Degrees or Diplomas awarded plus the academic Transcript.
6-A clear study or research plan to be developed in Italy at public, or officially recognized institutions supported, where possible, by evidence of the candidate’s admission at the relevant intended school or institution. 7-Alternatively, the candidate can provide evidence of the request of enrollment in the chosen course. The study plan can be inserted in the special space in the application form or can consist of a separate attachment.
8-Medical certificate of good health (no x-rays, a simple declaration by a doctor)
9-For post-graduate studies or research, photocopies of at least two letters of reference by academic and/or State authorities, (the originals will have to be produced in case the applicant is proposed for the scholarship).
Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

The application forms will be sent to Embassy of Italy, 99 Jalan U Thant, 55000, Kuala Lumpur within 9th Mayb 2008, 1.00 pm.

2. Useful information:
The scholarship holders will be pre-enrolled in the chosen courses through the Embassy of Italy. The candidates selected by the joined Italian-Malaysian Committee will have to hand in some more documents, the list of which will be communicated to them in due time.
At the Embassy of Italy, a file is available together with the application form and some basic information relating to the Italian education system regarding:
1. Italian language courses
2. Address of Italian Universities
3. Master or specialization courses held in English at Italian Universities.

The above mentioned list and addresses must be considered as basic tools for the candidates’ knowledge. They are not meant to be a complete description of the opportunities available for Malaysian citizens within the Italian education system.
