The Khazanah-Cambridge Scholarship provides financial sponsorship to Malaysians who plan to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge. The Khazanah-Cambridge Scholarship, established in 2009, is jointly sponsored by Yayasan Khazanah, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Malaysian Commonwealth Studies Centre.

The Khazanah-Cambridge Scholarship is a part of leadership development programme that is aimed at building Malaysia’s future leadership talent. Recipients of this scholarship are expected to not only demonstrate academic excellence, but also develop their leadership skills through training and participation in a number of activities.

Scholars of the programme will undergo an enriching personal journey, and will also be part of a cadre of future leaders that will be groomed to eventually lead Malaysia’s government-linked companies (GLCs). Eligibility

Undergraduate studies

• Below 20 years in age
• Must have an excellent academic track record, with an actual or predicted minimum of three A’s, or show evidence of excellent performance throughout their pre-university studies
• Must apply to pursue a full-time residential degree

Postgraduate Studies

• Below 40 years in age
• Must have a First Class or a Second Class (Upper) honours degree, or where there is a point system, a minimum CGPA of 3.5, or its equivalent, and, for those applying for a doctoral degree with a research Master degree, show an excellent report for the thesis; where a formal qualification is not yet conferred, applicants must show evidence of excellent performance throughout their studies
• Must apply to pursue any one of the following full-time residential courses of study:

Value of Scholarship

The ASEAN Scholarships lead to the award of the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education ‘Advanced’ (GCE ‘A’) Level (or equivalent) certificates. The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust was established in 1961 to support ELT practitioners from developing countries and countries in transition. Thanks to the Trust, hundreds of English language teachers have been able to develop their expertise through postgraduate courses in ELT and (applied) linguistics at UK universities.

This year, the Hornby Educational Trust MA Scholarships is offering one scholarship place for an English language teacher or teacher trainer from East Asia.

The Hornby Scholarship is for a one-year MA course in the UK starting September 2010. Candidates should be individuals who will make a real difference on their return to their countries. Those practitioners who are able to make a mark on their profession, initiate development and reform programmes and who will act as an inspiration to colleagues are preferred

Funding Arrangements

The funding held by the Hornby Trust covers the costs of the entire programme, except for the airfare and the IELTS test, which will be covered by the local British Council office.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates should normally:

• have successfully completed an undergraduate degree course equivalent to a Bachelors Degree in the UK
• have at least 5 years’ hands-on and direct experience as an English language teacher/teacher trainer (as opposed to experience only in a management role, such as co-ordinating policy or running a school)
• have been involved in some sort of developmental work as trainers or managers in ELT
• have attained a standard of English language competence broadly equivalent to Band score 6.5 on the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), with no less than 6 in any of the categories. *

* Shortlisted candidates who do not have IELTS score will be asked to take the test in March 2010.
